Job Loss Blues
What a difference a day makes. Only the day before, all seemed right with the world. You were still a part of the team. Then it was time to surrender your keys, give up your employee badge and take the banker’s box with your personal belongings. It’s your worst nightmare and you can’t seem to wake up.
When you lose your job, you not only lose that steady paycheck. You also lose your identity. The work you do becomes a part of your identity. When you meet someone, nine times out of ten, their second question is “Where do you work and what is it you do?” When you are out of a job, you become an outsider, no longer part of the office network. You begin to question your worth and abilities.
It can be lonely out there! Fortunately, there is an increase in career and job centers opening up across the country. These centers offer support and networking opportunities so you don’t have to go it alone.
It’s taking longer on average to find jobs. Only the lucky few are finding jobs within a few months. With the high numbers of unemployed and less available opportunities, your job search could last for years.
Searching for a job over a long period can be depressing. As more time passes between interviews and the less your phone rings, the worse it gets. You feel as if no one will ever hire you again.
